Actress Aubrey Plaza has released a statement after the tragic death of her husband, filmmaker Jeff Baena, who passed away by suicide at the age of 47.

The director and screenwriter was found at a residence near the Fern Dell Nature Trail in the Hollywood Hills, where he lived with Plaza.

In her first public remarks since the devastating news, Plaza and her family said: “This is an unimaginable tragedy. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time.”

Baena, known for his work on films such as Life After Beth (2014) and The Little Hours (2017), collaborated with Plaza on several projects. The couple began dating in 2011 and tied the knot a decade later. Plaza had previously shared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that they decided to marry during the COVID-19 pandemic after celebrating their 10th anniversary.

Baena’s notable contributions to the film industry include writing and directing the 2020 thriller Horse Girl, starring Alison Brie, and the 2022 dark comedy Spin Me Round.

He also co-wrote the 2004 comedy I Heart Huckabees, featuring Jude Law, Jason Schwartzman, Dustin Hoffman, and Mark Wahlberg. Additionally, he created the anthology comedy series Cinema Toast, which included episodes directed by Plaza and starring Brie.

Plaza, 40, had been scheduled to present at Sunday’s Golden Globes but did not attend following her husband’s death.
