Ukraine has confirmed launching two attacks on oil depots in western Russia, marking the latest in a series of airstrikes on strategic Russian targets.
According to Ukraine’s General Staff, the strikes targeted storage facilities in the Kaluga and Tula regions overnight.
The Ukrainian military stated that damage assessments are ongoing, but confirmed that the depots were critical to supporting Russia’s military operations in Ukraine.
Kaluga’s regional governor, Vladislav Shapsha, reported on Telegram that a fire erupted at an industrial site in the city of Lyudinovo following the attack. He later mentioned that seven drones had been intercepted, with one landing in a non-residential area.
Both Ukraine and Russia are positioning themselves ahead of the upcoming inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Monday, who has expressed his intent to pursue a swift resolution to the ongoing conflict.
In Tula, regional governor Dmitry Milyaev also reported a fire at a fuel and lubricant tank facility, which was caused by a Ukrainian drone strike.
Ukrainian forces have increasingly targeted oil depots and military production sites in Russia as they face ongoing pressure from Russian advances in eastern Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Russia continues its airstrikes on Ukrainian cities, with a missile attack on central Kyiv on Saturday resulting in four fatalities.
