The son of Uganda’s long-serving President Yoweri Museveni, who also heads the military, has threatened to behead the country’s leading opposition leader, Bobi Wine, on social media.
General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, often seen as the potential successor to his father, is no stranger to controversy, frequently sharing provocative statements online. In 2022, he faced backlash for threatening to invade Kenya, a comment he later apologized for, claiming some posts were meant to be ironic.
On Sunday evening, Kainerugaba posted on X, stating that his father, whom he referred to as “Mzee,” was the only person stopping him from taking action against Wine.
“Kabobi knows the only person protecting him from me is my father. If Mzee wasn’t there, I would cut off his head today!” Kainerugaba wrote. In another post, he added, “Finally! I woke you up? Before I behead you, repay us the money we loaned you,” implying the government had previously bribed Wine to weaken the opposition.
Bobi Wine, a popular musician-turned-politician and the strongest opponent to President Museveni, has made serious allegations against the government, including rejecting the 2021 election results over claims of ballot stuffing and voter intimidation.
Human rights organizations have also accused the Ugandan government of widespread abuses, including torture and arbitrary detention. However, the government has denied these allegations of election fraud and human rights violations.
