Some areas in Chicago are visibly quieter under Donald Trump’s immigration policies, with residents retreating into their homes due to heightened ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) raids targeting undocumented immigrants.
In Little Village, a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood on the city’s south side, what were once bustling streets now appear desolate.
Local residents told Sky News that fewer people are venturing outside, fearing they might get caught up in the crackdown.
While officials emphasize the focus on targeting migrant criminals, there are concerns about “collateral arrests,” where undocumented immigrants not originally targeted may still be detained. As a result, even those with legal status are proceeding with caution.
Steve, a local resident, shared his worry about his mother, who came from Mexico years ago without proper documentation.
“She crossed the border to give us a better life, to offer us education and opportunities. Now, she’s afraid to go out, fearing she could be picked up,” he said.
At a nearby community center that provides support to migrants, security measures have been stepped up. The entrance gate remains closed, and staff begin each day by scanning the streets for immigration officers. A notice on the door informs migrants of what to do if ICE arrives.
Oliber, a Venezuelan migrant working legally in the U.S. with a valid work permit, spoke about how the fear of deportation has changed his life.
“I feel scared,” he said. “I used to go out every day, even late at night. Now, I can’t go out anywhere. I’m terrified that I might be caught and deported. My family depends on me, and I can’t take that risk.”
