A member of the Sokoto State Community Guard Corps tragically lost his life due to an accidental discharge shortly after participating in a successful operation that rescued 66 kidnap victims from Tidibali Forest in Sokoto State.
The rescue mission, conducted on Monday, January 6, 2025, was led by the Nigerian Army with support from local guards. The operation targeted bandits in the eastern part of the state.
Confirming the incident, Colonel Ahmed Usman (rtd), Special Adviser to Governor Ahmed Aliyu on Security, explained that the guard accidentally discharged his weapon upon returning to base, resulting in a fatal injury.
“He was handling his firearm when it discharged accidentally, causing fatal injuries. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his wounds shortly after,” Usman said.
Usman also emphasized the progress of state-backed operations aimed at combating banditry and restoring peace in Sokoto.
“So far, 66 kidnapped individuals have been rescued, and several bandits have been neutralized. These operations will continue until we eliminate criminal activities and ensure the safety of all residents,” he added.
The rescued victims were taken to Isa town in Isa Local Government Area, where they were reunited with their families.
The Sokoto State Government has reiterated its commitment to supporting security personnel in their efforts to end banditry and improve safety in the region.
