Prince William Prevented Prince George From Supporting This Football Club

Prince William, 41, is well-known for his lifelong devotion to Aston Villa, a passion he has passed down to his eldest son, Prince George, 10.

However, George’s allegiance to the West Midlands club wasn’t a given. William recently revealed that he made one key intervention to ensure his son didn’t end up supporting Chelsea instead.

The Reason Behind William’s Decision

During a casual meet-and-greet with Aston Villa fans at a Wetherspoons in Birmingham, William explained his lighthearted reasoning.

Villa fan Darren Johnson shared: “George is a Villa fan, and we asked about the rest of the children. He said he wouldn’t force a football team on them—as long as it wasn’t Chelsea—because everyone around him is a Chelsea fan.”

The Prince’s humorous comment was met with laughter from the gathered fans, who were delighted to hear about George’s commitment to their team.

This informal exchange occurred at Birmingham’s New Street Station before Aston Villa’s match against Everton. According to Steve Jones, chairman of a non-league football team, William spent nearly an hour chatting with fans.

Steve recalled: “One of his protection team approached us first and made sure we’d picked a good spot. Every time a customer left, one of them quietly took the seat. When William arrived, we didn’t even realize how many plain-clothed security personnel were present—it was all very relaxed. We were even told we could call him ‘Will’ or ‘William’ because he was off duty.”

Why Aston Villa?

William’s love for Aston Villa has been a frequent topic of conversation. Fans asked him how he came to support the club, given that football isn’t traditionally associated with the royal family.

Darren recounted: “He told us that someone who looked after him as a child was a Villa fan. They took him to his first match against Bolton, and he’s been a fan ever since.”

William admitted that neither King Charles nor other royals share his enthusiasm for football. “It’s just me and George,” he said, emphasizing the special connection he shares with his eldest son through their shared love of the sport.

George’s Football Future

Prince George, who has often been spotted at Villa Park with his father, is now a proud Aston Villa supporter. The father-and-son duo frequently attend matches together, cheering on their team from the stands.

While William has made it clear he won’t pressure his children into supporting a particular team, his stance on Chelsea shows that even royals can’t resist a bit of friendly football rivalry.
