An Ogun State man, Akintoye Waris, has been arrested for allegedly stealing and slaughtering a Savannah he-goat worth N200,000 for his daughter’s naming ceremony.
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the arrest, stating that Waris was detained on January 2, 2025, in the Odeda area, alongside his accomplice, Ajayi Yusuf.
Odutola explained that the suspects reportedly raided a farm in the area after ensuring the farm owner, identified only as Mark, had taken his cattle out to graze on December 25. Upon Mark’s return, he discovered that one goat was missing and a search was initiated within the community.
During the search, some locals reported seeing the two men with the missing goat, riding a motorcycle towards Olodo town. Acting on the tip-off, the police dispatched detectives who successfully apprehended the suspects in the early hours of January 2, 2025.
In their confession, the suspects revealed that they stole the goat, transported it, and slaughtered it on December 27, 2024. They admitted that the goat was used for the preparation of food at the naming ceremony for Waris’s daughter in Olodo.
The suspects are currently in custody, undergoing further investigation at the Odeda Divisional Crime Branch. Odutola assured the public that the suspects would face prosecution once the investigation is completed, and promised to provide updates as the case develops.
