Nigeria Fights Back After Australian Government Cautioning Their Citizens To Travel Nigeria At Own’s Peril

In an unusual diplomatic move, both the Australian and Nigerian governments have issued travel advisories cautioning their citizens about traveling to each other’s countries due to ongoing security risks and social issues.

On December 31, 2024, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) issued a strong warning against visiting Nigeria, citing concerns over terrorism, kidnapping, violent crime, and civil unrest.

The advisory urged Australians to reconsider their travel plans, highlighting the heightened risks in various regions of the country.

In retaliation, the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs released its own travel advisory for Nigerians intending to visit Australia. This advisory raised alarms over increasing instances of racial discrimination, harassment, and hate crimes against foreigners, including antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents.

The statement specifically referenced a troubling event in Woollahra, Sydney, in December 2024, where a car was set on fire and anti-Israel graffiti was spray-painted on nearby buildings. The Nigerian government advised its citizens to exercise caution when traveling to Australia.

These reciprocal advisories reflect growing concerns over security and cultural tensions in both countries. While Australia is known for its multicultural society, the Nigerian government’s statement noted recent challenges regarding tolerance, urging citizens to stay vigilant and aware of their surroundings.

Nigerians in Australia who face harassment or discrimination have been advised to contact the Nigerian High Commission in Canberra for support.
