Former First Lady Michelle Obama will not attend the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, marking the second time in recent weeks she has opted out of an event involving former U.S. leaders and their spouses.
However, former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton will be present at the January 20 ceremony at the Capitol, along with Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton, who will accompany their husbands.
In a statement from the Office of Barack and Michelle Obama, it was confirmed:
“Former President Barack Obama is confirmed to attend the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies. Former First Lady Michelle Obama will not attend the upcoming inauguration.”
No reason was provided for Michelle Obama’s decision to skip the event.
Last week, she was also absent from the state funeral of former President Jimmy Carter in Washington, an occasion attended by former Presidents Trump, Obama, Bush, Clinton, and their spouses, with Michelle Obama being the sole exception.
