Marius Borg Høiby, the son of Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, has returned home from a rehabilitation clinic in London, and he was spotted arriving at Oslo’s Gardermoen airport with a new girlfriend by his side.
The 28-year-old’s return comes amid a quiet period for the Norwegian royal family concerning the ongoing investigation known as the “Marius case.” This investigation involves several charges against Marius; however, recent months have seen a focus shift as he pursued treatment for drug-related issues. His lawyer confirmed that he entered a rehab center in London as part of his recovery journey.
Norwegian magazine Se og Hør captured photos of Marius as he disembarked from his flight from London, rolling substantial luggage. However, it was his new companion who drew considerable attention, hinting at a fresh chapter for Marius, who had maintained a low profile during his rehabilitation.
Details about his new girlfriend remain scarce, and it is unclear whether Marius has returned to Norway for a permanent stay or simply to celebrate his birthday, which occurred on January 13.
In October, Norwegian publication Aftenposten reported that Marius had lost access to Crown Princess Mette-Marit and Crown Prince Haakon’s royal residence at Skaugum. He currently resides in a house at the edge of the forest near Skaugum in Asker, just a short distance from the couple’s private estate.
Last year, Marius faced legal troubles after allegedly assaulting a woman in her 20s, both psychologically and physically. In his statement following the incident, he admitted to drug use and expressed remorse to his family.
Se og Hør reported that Marius spent over 30 hours in police custody after an “incident in an apartment” in Frogner, Oslo, on August 4. The woman involved was treated in the hospital for a concussion. Following this, Marius, through his lawyer Øyvind Braitlin, issued a statement to Norwegian outlet NRK, acknowledging his actions and the role of substances in the incident.
Marius stated, “Last weekend, something happened that should never have happened. I committed bodily harm and damaged property during an alcohol- and cocaine-fueled argument. I have long struggled with substance abuse, and this will be taken very seriously in my renewed treatment.”
He emphasized the importance of taking responsibility for his actions, particularly regarding the woman involved and the emotional impact on his family. “I want to apologize to my girlfriend. She did not deserve what happened that night, nor the intense media scrutiny that followed. This pressure has been incredibly challenging for both of us,” he said.
Marius is the firstborn son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit from her relationship with convicted felon Morten Borg. He was raised by his mother and his stepfather, Crown Prince Haakon, after they married in 2001. Marius does not hold a public role and is not in line for the Norwegian throne.
