Man Murdered After Mocking Another Man’s Earrings As Gay

A tragic incident in Harare has ignited a national conversation after a man was fatally attacked for ridiculing another man’s choice to wear earrings. The altercation, which occurred on Tuesday, highlights ongoing cultural tensions and societal norms in Zimbabwe.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the death in a statement shared on their official X (formerly Twitter) account.

“On January 6, 2025, police in Harare arrested Benedict Rueben in connection with a case of murder at Boka Bus Terminus along Harare–Masvingo Road. The suspect struck the victim, Maxwell Mahanzu, 32, with a stone after the victim mocked him, accusing him of being gay due to his choice to wear earrings. The victim died instantly,” the statement read.

This incident has reignited discussions about cultural perceptions of masculinity and personal expression in Zimbabwe. While wearing earrings is widely accepted as a fashion statement globally, it remains controversial in Zimbabwe, where traditional values often shape public attitudes. Public accusations of homos*xuality can still provoke strong reactions, reflecting the stigma surrounding the topic.

Homos*xuality remains a deeply sensitive issue in Zimbabwe, with lingering effects of past political rhetoric.

Former President Robert Mugabe was known for his outspoken opposition to homos*xuality, frequently using the term as a slur against critics and foreign governments, particularly the British. These attitudes continue to influence societal views today.

The killing has prompted renewed calls for greater tolerance and education on personal freedoms. Advocacy groups are urging public awareness campaigns to address harmful stereotypes and promote understanding within communities, aiming to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
