Buckingham Palace has confirmed that King Charles extended a personal message of congratulations to Donald Trump on the occasion of his inauguration as the 47th President of the United States.
The message reportedly emphasized the strong and enduring relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States.
Donald Trump was sworn in on Monday in Washington, securing his presidency with 76.9 million votes. The Republican defeated Democratic opponent Kamala Harris in all seven swing states, becoming the first Republican to achieve this since 2004.
The inauguration day began with Trump attending a service at St. John’s Church in Washington, accompanied by Vice President-elect JD Vance and their families. Among those present to support him were his wife, First Lady Melania Trump, his daughter Ivanka, and his son Barron, who traveled from New York City, where he is currently a student.
King Charles previously met Trump in 2019 during the President’s state visit to the UK. The King and Queen Camilla hosted Trump for tea at Clarence House and later joined him at various state events.
Prince William also met with Trump last year following the ceremonial reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Their meeting took place at the British ambassador’s residence in the Salon Jaune room.
In an interview with the New York Post, Trump shared details of his conversation with William, revealing that he inquired about Princess Kate’s and King Charles’s health amid their cancer battles.
“I had a great talk with the prince,” Trump said. “I asked him about his wife, and he said she’s doing well. I asked about his father, and he told me his father is fighting very hard. He loves his father and his wife deeply, and it was a sad topic. We had a great conversation for more than half an hour.”
