King Charles, currently enjoying the festive season at Sandringham Estate with close family and friends, took a moment from his Christmas break to issue a heartfelt statement on Sunday night following the passing of President Jimmy Carter at the age of 100.
The King’s statement, signed “Charles R,” read: “It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of President Carter. He was a committed public servant and devoted his life to promoting peace and human rights. His dedication and humility served as an inspiration to many, and I remember with great fondness his visit to the United Kingdom in 1977. My thoughts and prayers are with President Carter’s family and the American people at this time.”
Family Gatherings and Notable Absences
Earlier that day, Charles was seen attending church at St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham alongside his sister, Princess Anne, her husband, Sir Timothy Laurence, and other family members.
On Christmas Day, the King was joined by Queen Camilla, the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children, Prince Edward, Princess Anne, and their families, as well as Princess Beatrice.
Absent this year were Prince Andrew, Sarah, Duchess of York, and Princess Eugenie. Andrew and Sarah spent the day at their Royal Lodge residence in Windsor, while Eugenie celebrated with her husband Jack Brooksbank’s family, accompanied by their sons, August and Ernest. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, along with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, remained at their Montecito home in the United States.
A Reflective Christmas Speech
During his Christmas Day broadcast, King Charles expressed gratitude for the medical professionals who supported him and the Princess of Wales during their cancer battles.
“I am deeply grateful to the selfless doctors and nurses who have supported us and other members of my family through the uncertainties and anxieties of illness, providing the strength, care, and comfort we have needed,” he shared.
He also extended thanks to those who offered kind words of sympathy and encouragement, highlighting the importance of compassion and community during challenging times.
