The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has reassured Igbo people living abroad that their safety will be guaranteed if they return home for the New Year celebrations.
In a statement issued by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, IPOB promised that operatives of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) would maintain a secure and peaceful environment throughout the festive season.
The statement read:
“Alaigbo is a peaceful region. IPOB encourages our people to come home and enjoy a peaceful festive season. ESN operatives will ensure a calm atmosphere during this period. Our people should return home and contribute to maintaining peace in Alaigbo.”
IPOB emphasized the importance of peace and security in the Southeast, highlighting its role as a key economic hub in Africa.
“We need peace to thrive as an economic powerhouse. Every Igbo person must contribute to ensuring peace and security in Alaigbo. While other regions enjoy relative peace, our region is often subjected to occupation and subjugation by Nigerian security forces.”
The group also criticized the Nigerian government for worsening insecurity in the region, citing the heavy presence of military and police checkpoints that hinder travelers and motorists.
“The numerous police and military checkpoints are causing frustration for motorists and travelers. IPOB calls for the removal of these indiscriminate checkpoints in the Southeast.”
IPOB also urged Igbos in the diaspora to bring their investments back home to help stimulate economic growth and create job opportunities for the region’s youth.
“We are committed to ensuring that any investments brought home are secure and well-protected.”
