German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock condemned former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent statement about seizing the Panama Canal, which he reiterated during his inaugural address on January 21.
Baerbock called Trump’s comments “unacceptable,” particularly his remarks about controlling Greenland, an autonomous territory of NATO ally Denmark.
In response to a question about Trump’s statements, Baerbock told German broadcaster RBB, “Any threat against a NATO member or other states is of course completely unacceptable.”
However, she also emphasized the importance of a measured response, suggesting that Germany should not only focus on how Trump expresses his views but also consider the motivations behind them. “It’s not about how President Trump says something… but we should look at why he says something,” she explained. “The focus should be on what interests are behind (Trump’s statements)… and then standing up for our own interests.”
Regarding the Panama Canal, Baerbock speculated that Trump’s rhetoric was influenced by concerns over China’s expanding global influence, particularly its investments in ports and infrastructure.
Trump had claimed during his inauguration that China was “operating” the canal, a vital trade route that the U.S. transferred to Panama in 1999. “We didn’t give it to China, we gave it to Panama. And we’re taking it back,” he declared.
This was not the first time Trump has suggested using military force to regain U.S. control over the canal.
Baerbock acknowledged that Germany is realistic about Trump’s second term, saying, “The USA is one of our most important allies. We want to and will continue to work closely together.” She also highlighted Germany’s focus on strengthening its own strategic position.
