German football club SSV Reutlingen has announced the tragic death of their 22-year-old player, Luca Meixner.
The midfielder, who made his debut for the first team in 2021, was reportedly found dead in his bed following the Christmas period.
The club expressed their deep sorrow in a statement shared on Instagram on Monday, January 6, describing themselves as “deeply saddened and stunned” by his unexpected passing.
“Last weekend, we received the heartbreaking news that our player Luca Meixner unexpectedly passed away on Friday, December 27, at the age of 22,” the statement read. “The entire SSV family is profoundly saddened and shocked. His teammates, staff, and all members of the club mourn alongside Luca’s grieving family, and our thoughts are with his family, friends, and loved ones.”
The club also requested that Luca’s family’s privacy be respected during this difficult time.
Meixner began his football journey with SSV’s youth teams and progressed to the under-17 squad in 2017. Four years later, he made his senior debut and went on to make 100 appearances for the club, scoring six goals.
His final match for Reutlingen was on December 7, when he played 87 minutes in a 1-1 draw before the winter break.
