An 18-year-old identified as Oghenetejiri Kosini has been accused of assaulting his landlady’s 2-year-old daughter in Delta State. The alleged incident reportedly occurred in Okpe Local Government Area on December 12, 2024.

Human rights activist Comrade Israel Joe brought attention to the case in a Facebook post on January 6, 2024, criticizing the Divisional Police Officer of Orerokpe and the investigating officer for their alleged mishandling and cover-up of the situation. He asserted that the suspect was released without charges on Christmas Eve.

“Dear DPO Orerokpe, a two-year-old child was reportedly brutally assaulted by 18-year-old Oghenetejiri Kosini on December 12, 2024,” he wrote.

“The child’s mother, who is also the landlady, was outside when the suspect allegedly entered the house to commit this act. Despite his arrest, the investigating officer allegedly pressured the mother to settle the case out of court, while the mother seeks justice for her daughter.

“In an apparent effort to obstruct proper investigation, the officer supposedly refused to provide a form for a medical examination at the hospital, claiming the suspect did not deny the allegations and had confessed in his statement.

“It is concerning that the police would not conduct a thorough investigation and rely solely on a suspect’s confessional statement, which could easily be contested in court. According to the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2023, the suspect’s lawyer should be present when any statements are taken.

“Reports indicate that the suspect was released on December 24, 2024, contrary to legal procedures, while the mother gathered necessary documentation, including medical reports, in preparation for prosecution.

“I urge the police to re-arrest the suspect and transfer him to the Delta State Command Criminal Investigation Department for proper investigation and prosecution. We must advocate for justice, as failure to do so will have serious consequences. A full video on this matter will be released tomorrow.”
