The Delta State Police Command has apprehended a 30-year-old man, Daniel Onyejekwe, for allegedly stabbing his neighbor, Christian, to death during a confrontation over rice.
The incident took place on New Year’s Day in the Ogwanja area of Sapele, following a heated argument that escalated into a physical altercation.
Eyewitnesses reported to Punch that the conflict began when rice was being distributed along Boyo Road in Ogwanja.
“Christian and Daniel began fighting over the rice, and during the struggle, Daniel grabbed a bottle and stabbed Christian multiple times. The vigilante group rushed him to the hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival,” a witness said.
The spokesperson for the State Police Command, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident on Thursday.
“It is confirmed, and the suspect is in custody. The two were involved in a fight and sustained serious injuries. Unfortunately, Christian died,” the PPRO stated.
SP Edafe assured the public that the suspect would face prosecution after the investigation is completed.
The deceased’s body has been taken to a mortuary.
