Chinese authorities executed 62-year-old Fan Weiqiu on Monday, January 20, for driving his car into a group of people exercising outside a stadium, resulting in the deaths of 35 individuals and injuries to over 40 others.
Fan, reportedly angered over a property dispute following his divorce, carried out the attack a day before China’s prestigious air show in Zhuhai City.
He drove his off-road vehicle across the Zhuhai Sports Center grounds, hitting numerous people who were exercising around a track.
When police attempted to stop him, they found Fan in his car, attempting to harm himself with a knife. He was taken to the hospital and later sentenced to death by the Zhuhai Intermediate People’s Court.
The court described his actions as “extremely vile” and noted that his methods were “particularly cruel.” The attack is the deadliest in China in over a decade, according to authorities.
