South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been barred from leaving the country, according to an announcement by the Ministry of Justice on Monday, December 9.
The decision follows a turbulent week marked by political upheaval after Yoon briefly imposed martial law.
On the night of December 3, Yoon deployed special forces and helicopters to the parliament, but lawmakers swiftly rejected his decree, forcing him to rescind the order.
Despite narrowly surviving an impeachment motion in parliament on Saturday, Yoon faces mounting pressure as investigations close in on him and his close allies, including a probe into alleged insurrection.
The Ministry of Justice confirmed that Yoon is now the first sitting South Korean president to face a travel ban.
The ban extends to former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, who is currently in detention, and ex-Interior Minister Lee Sang-min, for their involvement in last week’s events.
