Two people have been taken to hospital and a dog killed following an explosion onboard a ‘pleasure boat’ at a marina.

Fire crews rushed to Chirk Marina in Wrexham, North Wales, after a gas explosion caused two boats to catch fire at around 6pm on Saturday.

Two people managed to escape the blaze with minor injuries and were taken to hospital by ambulance before the vessel sank, killing a pet dog.

The fire spread to a second vessel – a traditional 40ft canal boat – as firefighters with rescue pumps tackled the inferno.

Crews prevented the burning boat from colliding with other vessels and were able to bring the secondary blaze under control.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service posted dramatic pictures and shared details of the incident on social media.

It said: ‘Green Watch had a challenging night, starting with a marine incident involving a gas explosion aboard a pleasure craft.

‘Two rescue pumps from Wrexham attended the scene, supported by Deeside’s water rescue unit.

‘Unfortunately, one boat was completely destroyed and sank, sadly a dog that was on board at the time of the explosion couldn’t be saved and sadly passed away on the boat.

‘The second vessel sustained severe fire damage, but crews limited the fire spread.’
