Former U.S. President James Earl “Jimmy” Carter has passed away at the age of 100.

Carter, known for redefining the role of a post-presidency, died peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, on Sunday, December 29, at approximately 3:45 p.m., according to his son, Chip Carter.

The longest-living U.S. president, Carter had entered home hospice care in February 2023 following a series of brief hospitalizations.

Carter served a single term as president, marked by historic achievements such as brokering peace between Israel and Egypt. However, his presidency was also overshadowed by challenges like the Iran hostage crisis.

In the decades following his time in office, Carter’s legacy flourished through his humanitarian efforts with the Carter Center and philanthropic work, including his dedication to Habitat for Humanity.

“People will be celebrating Jimmy Carter for hundreds of years. His reputation is only going to grow,” wrote historian Douglas Brinkley in The Unfinished Presidency of Jimmy Carter.

Carter’s contributions earned him numerous accolades, including the Nobel Peace Prize and the United Nations Human Rights Prize. Alongside his wife, Rosalynn Carter, he also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Bill Clinton.

“Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter have done more good things for more people in more places than any other couple on the face of the Earth,” Clinton remarked.

Rosalynn Carter, his wife of 77 years, passed away in November 2023.

Jimmy Carter is survived by his children—Amy, Chip, Jack, and Jeff—along with 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
