A South African man has reportedly stabbed his 37-year-old wife, Rebecca Mokoena, to death following accusations of infidelity.
The incident occurred over the weekend when the suspect allegedly found Mokoena and a male neighbor in their matrimonial bed while their 3-year-old child was asleep on the floor in the same room.
The ANC Youth League in Mpumalanga condemned the tragic incident in a statement issued on Sunday, December 22, 2024, by its Provincial Spokesperson, Comrade Brilliant Mncina. The organization also decried the alarming rise in femicide across the country.
“The festive season is often marked by frequent incidents of domestic violence and abuse, particularly against women and children. The ANC Youth League Mpumalanga strongly condemns the rampant killings of women and children as seen and reported on social media,” the statement read.
The statement highlighted recent femicide cases, including the brutal killings of Bongeka Makhathini (21), Nontobeko Cele (25), and Rebecca Mokoena (37), describing them as evidence of a systemic crisis regarding the safety of women in South Africa.
“As the youth of the African National Congress, we cannot remain silent while the murder and abuse of women become common occurrences in our society. The ANC Youth League reaffirms its commitment to eradicating violence and abuse against women and children,” the statement continued.
The organization called for collective action to address gender-based violence and urged community members to foster a culture of respect, tolerance, and non-violence.
Additionally, the ANC Youth League warned against alcohol and drug abuse during the festive season, encouraging responsible behavior to ensure the safety of all.
“May this festive season bring joy and renewed energy to you all. Merry Christmas and a happy new year. Amandla!” the statement concluded.
