A South African man, Thulani Foshini Sikhundla, has been sentenced to two life terms and an additional five years in prison for the brutal murders of his girlfriend, Dorris Alina Sibiya, and her daughter, Noxolo Simile Khoza.

The sentencing was handed down by the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court on Monday, December 8, 2024.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed that Sikhundla, 40, was in a domestic relationship with Sibiya, who lived with her two children in Matsulu B.

The tragic incident occurred on April 2, 2024, when Sikhundla visited Sibiya at her home. An argument over allegations of infidelity escalated into violence. Sikhundla attacked Noxolo in her bedroom and then stabbed Sibiya multiple times.

Sibiya’s teenage son tried to intervene after hearing the commotion but escaped unharmed despite being attacked. Sikhundla fled into the mountains, leaving both victims dead at the scene.

During the trial, Sikhundla pleaded not guilty and showed no remorse for his actions. Senior State Advocate Ashwin Poodhun presented strong evidence, including eyewitness testimonies, graphic photographs, and postmortem reports confirming multiple stab wounds as the cause of death.

Advocate Poodhun argued for a harsh sentence, emphasizing that Sikhundla’s actions violated societal values of protecting women. A victim impact statement prepared by Court Preparation Officer Nomfundo Mokoena highlighted the emotional and financial toll on the victims’ family.

Judge Sheila Msibi found no grounds to deviate from the statutory minimum sentences, imposing two life terms for the murders and an additional five years for attempted murder.

“This sentence serves as a strong reminder of the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) dedication to upholding the rights and safety of victims,” the NPA stated. “It sends a clear message that acts of violence will be met with severe consequences.”
