A councilman, Marcos de Araujo was shot to death in front of his home in Brazil.
The 57-year-old man and a woman had their backs turned to the killers and were talking to his mother-in-law, Marina Maia, 75, when two gunmen ran up and opened fire on Thursday night.
The lawmaker was shot at least four times by one of the assailants as the woman sitting next to him carrying a dog ran for cover.
The assailant’s accomplice ran over and fired multiple shots at de Araujo while Maia remained in her chair and covered her head from the flying bullets.
De Araujo, who was shot nine times, was confirmed dead at the scene.
Maia was shot in the buttocks and her back. She was rushed to a local hospital. Her medical condition is unknown.
The suspects fled on a motorcycle and were still on the run as of Friday morning.
De Araujo was born in the northeastern city of Tabuleiro do Norte and was reelected to a fourth term to the municipality’s council in October.
De Araujo also served as the president of the city’s chamber of commerce.
The Tabuleiro do Norte city hall announced three days of mourning.
