As King Frederik approaches the one-year anniversary of his reign, certain adjustments to royal traditions are still being implemented, including updates to the insignia worn by the Royal Life Guards.
Currently, the guards continue to wear uniforms featuring the insignia of Frederik’s predecessor, Queen Margrethe.
However, starting in 2025, the Royal Life Guards will adopt badges bearing Frederik’s insignia. The change will coincide with the King’s New Year’s message at the end of December.
Queen Margrethe’s Abdication
The transition follows Queen Margrethe’s dramatic New Year’s address in 2024, during which she announced her abdication after 52 years on the throne.
In her heartfelt statement, Margrethe shared:
“I have decided that now is the right time. On January 14, 2024—52 years after I followed my beloved father—I will step back as the Queen of Denmark. I leave the throne to my son, Crown Prince Frederik.”
She expressed gratitude for the support she received throughout her reign, saying: “Thank you for the overwhelming warmth and support during all these years. To the changing governments, The Parliament, and the many people who embraced me and my family with kind words and thoughts, turning the years into a string of pearls.”
Margrethe concluded with a hopeful message for the future: “It is my hope that the new King and Queen will be met with the same trust and devotion which have fallen to my lot. They deserve it! Denmark deserves it! GOD BLESS DENMARK, GOD BLESS YOU ALL.”
Margrethe’s Continued Role
Although Queen Margrethe has stepped back from the throne, she continues to carry out royal duties in a reduced capacity. Earlier this year, she sustained a back injury after a fall, prompting a brief hospital stay.
Lene Balleby, the head of royal communications, shared: “According to the circumstances, the Queen is doing well but was admitted for observation for the time being.”
As Denmark adjusts to King Frederik’s reign, the introduction of his insignia marks another step in solidifying his role as the nation’s monarch.
