King Charles Breaks Tradition with This Year’s Christmas Speech

King Charles has chosen to depart from tradition by recording this year’s Christmas Day message at a church rather than on a royal estate.

The monarch filmed his annual address at the Fitzrovia Chapel in London, a former hospital chapel, following his ongoing battle with cancer.

The chapel, once part of Middlesex Hospital, will serve as the backdrop for the King’s speech, marking the first time in 14 years that his message has not been filmed at a royal residence.

The chapel’s connection to healthcare and community is expected to align with the themes Charles will discuss, including the remarkable work of the healthcare profession.

The King and his daughter-in-law, the Princess of Wales, were both diagnosed with cancer this year. He will also highlight the importance of community, praising the British public for their resilience following the far-right riots and the Southport stabbings.

After being diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer in February, the 76-year-old King is reportedly making positive progress and will continue treatment into 2025.

The decision to film the speech outside royal estates was reportedly the King’s own idea, with a royal source stating that he wanted to reach out to communities rather than bring them into the royal residences. Despite being a Christmas address, Charles aims to connect with people of all faiths and none.

The King had never visited the chapel before, but was reportedly “absolutely enchanted” by its size, beauty, and history.

The Grade II listed chapel, located near Oxford Street, features Byzantine-inspired architecture and a Gothic revival style with a marble interior and over 500 gold leaf stars in the ceiling. Though not regularly used for services, it hosts various events, including weddings and exhibitions.

The chapel is currently closed to the public but will reopen on January 8 for a special exhibition.

It was also revealed that King Charles intends to resume a full schedule of public duties in 2025, including both domestic and international visits.
