Hackers Take Control Of NBS Website

Hackers have gained unauthorized access to the website of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The NBS confirmed the breach on Wednesday night, issuing a statement on X (formerly Twitter) urging the public to disregard any content published on the site until the issue is resolved.

The agency’s post read: “This is to inform the public that the NBS Website has been hacked, and we are working to recover it. Please disregard any message or report posted until the website is fully restored. Thank you.”

The hack occurred just a day after the NBS released its crime experience and security perception survey report.

The report revealed that Nigerians paid a total of N2.23 trillion in ransom between May 2023 and April 2024. It also highlighted that approximately 51.89 million crime incidents were reported across Nigerian households during the same period.

According to the report, the north-west region recorded the highest number of crime incidents, estimated at over 14 million, while the south-east had the lowest with over six million cases.

Additionally, the report indicated that crime incidents in rural areas (26,526,069) were higher than those in urban areas (25,360,963).
