Emir Of Kano To His Daughters: ‘Slap Your Husband Back If He Slaps You’

The monarch made this statement during the National Dialogue Conference on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) prevention from an Islamic perspective.

He revealed that in the past five years, wife-beating and domestic violence have constituted 45% of cases in the nine Shari’a courts of Kano.

He explained that while the Quran allows light physical discipline within marriage, the rules are often ignored, leading to severe abuse.

Sanusi highlighted that his research, which included a doctorate thesis on family law, showed that a significant portion of cases involved serious abuse, such as broken limbs, lost teeth, and constant beatings with sticks.

Sanusi strongly condemned wife-beating, asserting that it is prohibited in Islam and considered a crime. He emphasized that violence, including gender-based violence, is harmful and must be eradicated.

The Emir reiterated his view on teaching daughters not to tolerate abuse and instructing sons that such behavior is unacceptable.

He also mentioned that if one of his daughters were to return home after being slapped by her husband without defending herself, he would take action himself, stating that he did not raise his daughter to be treated that way.

He called for a societal shift where all forms of physical violence, whether against a spouse, child, or any individual, are rejected as violations of human dignity.
