An eight-year-old girl tragically lost her life while reportedly attempting to defend her mother during a late-night knife attack.

Malikika Al Katib, a schoolgirl from New Ross, Co Wexford, Ireland, was allegedly stabbed after rushing downstairs upon realizing her mother, Alisha Al Katib, 31, was being attacked in their home late Sunday night, Dec. 1.

The attacker then turned on the child, stabbing her multiple times, according to reports from The Irish Mirror.

A source revealed, “She realized her mum was in danger and tried to help as much as a young child could.”

Malikika sustained severe injuries before paramedics arrived at the William Street residence. She was rushed to University Hospital Waterford, where she tragically passed away on Monday morning, Dec. 2.

The incident occurred around 11:45 pm, with Gardaí from the Armed Support Unit responding to the scene.

Malikika, her mother, and the attacker—reported to be a man in his 30s—were found injured and taken to the hospital. While Malikika succumbed to her injuries, her mother is expected to recover fully.

Malikika attended New Ross Educate Together National School, which declared a critical incident in response to the tragedy. Principal Theresa White expressed the community’s sorrow: “This is a terrible tragedy for the family, our school, and the community. Our deepest sympathies and thoughts are with the family and friends. We have implemented our Critical Incident Management Plan with support from the National Educational Psychological Service (NEPS).

“Teachers are working to support students, and we are advising parents on how to help their children navigate this difficult time. We ask for privacy during this period.”

Gardaí have launched a full investigation, with forensic experts examining the scene and a post-mortem scheduled. A spokesperson confirmed: “We are investigating all circumstances surrounding the death of a young girl following a fatal assault at a residence in New Ross. Emergency services responded at approximately 11:45 pm on Sunday. The girl was taken to University Hospital Waterford, where she passed away from her injuries early this morning.

“A woman and a man in their 30s are also receiving treatment for injuries that are not life-threatening. The scene remains cordoned off for examination, and a Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to lead the inquiry.”

This harrowing incident has left the local community devastated as investigations continue.
