US President-elect Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that Mexico’s newly elected president has assured him that she will “stop migration” through Mexico and into the United States.
Earlier this week, Trump revealed plans to impose a 25% tariff on Mexican imports to pressure the country into cracking down on illegal immigration and drug trafficking. He also stated that Canada and China would face 25% and 10% tariffs, respectively, as part of an executive order.
“Just had a wonderful conversation with the new President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo,” Trump shared on Truth Social.
“She has agreed to stop migration through Mexico and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border,” he added.
Trump, 78, mentioned that he and Sheinbaum Pardo also discussed the issue of illegal drugs entering the US from the south during their “very productive conversation.”
“We also talked about what can be done to stop the massive drug inflow into the United States, as well as U.S. consumption of these drugs,” he wrote. “It was a very productive conversation!”
Sheinbaum Pardo, 62, a scientist and former mayor of Mexico City, became Mexico’s first female president in October. In a social media post, she confirmed her conversation with Trump, stating that migrant caravans heading to the US border “are being taken care of” within Mexico.
“I had an excellent conversation with President Donald Trump,” Sheinbaum Pardo posted on X. “We discussed Mexico’s strategy on the migration phenomenon, and I shared that caravans are not arriving at the northern border because they are being taken care of in Mexico. We also discussed strengthening security collaboration while respecting our sovereignty and the campaign we are carrying out in the country to prevent fentanyl consumption,” she added.
In another post on Truth Social, Trump indicated that Sheinbaum’s commitment to stopping migrant crossings would take effect immediately.
“Mexico will stop people from going to our Southern Border, effective immediately,” he wrote. “THIS WILL GO A LONG WAY TOWARD STOPPING THE ILLEGAL INVASION OF THE USA. Thank you!!!”
Trump has previously vowed to launch the largest deportation operation in US history once he assumes office on January 20.
