Tony Todd, the iconic actor known for his role as the killer in Candyman and its 2021 sequel, has passed away at the age of 69.
His death was confirmed by his representative on November 6, with reports stating he died at his home in Los Angeles. However, the cause of death has not been disclosed.
Born on December 4, 1954, in Washington, D.C., Todd began his acting career at the Eugene O’Neill National Actors Theatre Institute and the Trinity Rep Conservatory.
His standout role as the titular character in the 1992 horror classic Candyman cemented his place in the genre, and he was later honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the New York City Horror Film Festival.
In addition to Candyman, Todd appeared in numerous popular TV series, including 21 Jump Street, Night Court, MacGyver, Matlock, Jake and the Fatman, Law & Order, The X-Files, NYPD Blue, Beverly Hills 90210, Xena: Warrior Princess, Murder, She Wrote, and Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager.
He also starred as Ben in the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead. His portrayal of the supernatural figure Candyman, a hook-handed killer, became his most recognized role, which he reprised in the 2021 sequel directed by Nia DaCosta.
This sequel serves as a direct continuation of the 1992 original film and the fourth installment in the Candyman franchise, which is based on Clive Barker’s short story “The Forbidden.”
