Queen Camilla is currently resting at home as she continues to recover from a chest infection. During her recovery, she may find comfort in listening to her favorite radio soap opera, The Archers.
Sadly, it was announced on Friday that actress June Spencer, who portrayed matriarch Peggy Woolley in the iconic radio drama, passed away at the age of 105.
In a touching tribute, Camilla expressed: “For over 70 years, June Spencer was a beloved part of so many people’s lives, brilliantly blending the roles of reassuring matriarch and ‘gangsta granny’ in Peggy Woolley. She will be greatly missed, and I extend my heartfelt condolences to her family.”
Camilla has long been a fan of The Archers and even made a special appearance on the show for its 60th anniversary in 2011. When the drama celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2021, the then Duchess of Cornwall hosted several stars, including June, at Clarence House.
June was part of The Archers from its first episode in 1951, playing Peggy, a character known for her traditional values, until her retirement in 2023 at the age of 103.
June’s family confirmed her death, stating: “June Spencer, aged 105, best known for playing Peggy in BBC Radio 4’s The Archers, passed away peacefully in her sleep early this morning. Her family would like to extend their deepest thanks to the staff at Liberham Lodge, who cared for her so lovingly during her final years.”
Camilla’s chest infection was confirmed on Tuesday, with a Palace spokesperson sharing: “Her Majesty The Queen is currently unwell with a chest infection, and her doctors have advised a short period of rest.
Regrettably, Her Majesty has had to withdraw from her engagements this week but hopes to be well enough to attend this weekend’s Remembrance events. She apologizes for any inconvenience or disappointment caused.”
