Halloween holds a special place in Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s history, marking a memorable night before their relationship became public.
In his memoir, Spare, Harry shared memories of a fun evening out with Meghan before, as he put it, “everything was changed forever.”
The couple’s romance began in the summer of 2016 after they were introduced by a mutual friend. They enjoyed low-key dates at Soho House in London and even took a whirlwind trip to Botswana before the world learned of their relationship.
During their Netflix docuseries, Harry and Meghan recalled a Halloween night out in Toronto in 2016, wanting to “pull the pin on the fun grenade.”
Meghan also mentioned the outing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2021, saying, “The four of us just snuck out in Halloween costumes to have one fun night out on the town before it was out in the world that we were a couple.”
Joining them that night were Harry’s cousin Princess Eugenie and her now-husband Jack Brooksbank.
With a post-apocalyptic theme, the Halloween party saw the couple in costumes they shared in personal snaps during the docuseries. Harry shared more details in Spare, mentioning his nerves over his costume.
He wrote, “We invited Euge and Jack to join us for Halloween. And Meg’s best friend Markus. Toronto’s Soho House was having a big party, and the theme was ‘Apocalypse.’ Dress accordingly.”
For his costume, Harry sought help from his friend, actor Tom Hardy, borrowing Hardy’s full outfit from Mad Max. He wrote, “Tom had given me the whole kit before I left Britain, and when I tried it on, Meg roared with laughter.”
The next day, news of their relationship broke. Just a year later, Harry proposed at Nottingham Cottage, and they wed in May 2018 at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor. Now living in Montecito, Santa Barbara with their children, Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3, the Sussex family enjoys a quieter life.
Reflecting on Halloween with their own children, Meghan once shared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that Archie dressed as a dinosaur for just a few minutes, while Lilibet was a skunk, prompting Meghan to laugh, “She was a little skunk…like Flower from Bambi.”
