Pharrell Williams has finally addressed Drake’s purchase of his former jewelry and the subsequent threat to melt it down, after the items were sold at auction for $3.3 million.
In an interview with GG magazine published on Wednesday (November 13), Pharrell was asked about the auction of his jewelry in 2022.
The Grammy-winning producer and Louis Vuitton Men’s Creative Director shared his perspective on letting go of his possessions: “You never realize how much all the stuff you have weighs on you, but it does. You don’t know it until you get rid of it. When you let that go, man, you feel so free.”
When questioned about Drake’s comments in his verse on Travis Scott’s “Meltdown” last year, where Drake rapped about melting down the jewelry he bought from Pharrell, the producer responded nonchalantly: “It didn’t [strike me].”
In the song, Drake raps, “I melt down the chains that I bought from yo boss / Give a fuck about all of that heritage shit,” continuing with, “Since Virgil not around, the members done hung up the Louis / They not even wearing that shit.” These lyrics reignited the long-running feud between Drake and Pusha T.
Drake’s purchase of the jewelry included a 14K three-tone N.E.R.D pendant chain, a white gold brain pendant chain, and a skateboard pendant chain, which he wore in his “Jumbotron Shit Poppin” video.
Pharrell acknowledged that, beyond the drama, Drake is a fan of music and respects its history: “At the heart of it, he’s a fan of music. He’s a fan of the history of what it is, and I happen to be a part of that, and those artifacts are a part of it.”
