Paul Mescal captured attention with his candid remarks about meeting King Charles at the Gladiator II premiere in Leicester Square.

The King, celebrating his 76th birthday, attended the star-studded event without Queen Camilla, who was recovering from a chest infection. During the evening, Charles mingled with the cast, including Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, and Paul Mescal.

In a video shared by Variety from the LA premiere of the film, Paul reflected on the unexpected encounter, admitting it “wasn’t on the list of priorities” for him as an Irishman. “It’s never something I thought was on the bingo cards,” he said.

Acknowledging Ireland’s historical context, he added: “I’m Irish, so it’s not on the list of priorities, but it’s an amazing thing for Ridley [Scott] because I know how important that is for him. Seeing his film celebrated in that context was pretty special.”

When asked about his conversation with the King, Paul confessed: “You just kind of nod along… I found it hard to hear what he was saying because your head is in such a frenzy. So, you’re just nodding and smiling.”

Fans applauded Paul’s forthrightness, with one noting, “He handled this really well—honest but respectful.” Another commented, “He recognizes the significance of the event for the legendary Ridley Scott.”

King Charles, who succeeded Queen Elizabeth II as patron of the Film and TV Charity, continues to support the UK’s entertainment industry.

Meanwhile, Queen Camilla expressed regret for missing the event, telling Ridley Scott at a prior reception at Buckingham Palace: “I am so sorry I’m not coming tonight. I’d be coughing throughout it.”
