The Nigerian government has introduced a new healthcare policy to offer free caesarean sections (C-sections) to women nationwide, as part of its efforts to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality, which remain among the highest globally.
The announcement was made by Health Minister Ali Pate in Abuja during the launch of the Maternal Mortality Reduction Initiative (MAMII) at the Joint Annual Review (JAR) of the Sector Wide Approach (SWAp) for health.
This initiative aims to improve maternal and newborn health by enhancing access to essential healthcare services, particularly in underserved areas.
“This initiative is part of our ongoing efforts to reduce maternal mortality,” Pate stated. “No woman should lose her life just because she cannot afford a C-section.”
The policy is designed to eliminate financial obstacles for women who need C-sections, whether due to emergencies or planned deliveries.
It also seeks to strengthen primary healthcare services and promote community involvement in maternal health.
The initiative has garnered support from the World Health Organization (WHO), with Nigeria’s WHO Country Representative, Walter Mulombo, highlighting the importance of proper implementation.
“If done correctly, this initiative will succeed. We are here to support it every step of the way,” Mulombo affirmed.
At the event, Pate urged Nigerians to hold the government accountable for ensuring accessible and quality healthcare, in alignment with President Tinubu’s healthcare reform agenda.
