A 29-year-old man named Jeremy Bosman has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the death of his three-year-old stepson, Charvandre Kieran Everson.
The incident reportedly arose from Bosman’s violent response to the child wetting the bed.
Mojalefa Senokoatsane, a spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Northern Cape, stated that the alleged abuse occurred on October 19, when Bosman discovered that Charvandre had urinated in bed.
Witnesses and initial investigations suggest that Bosman reacted by repeatedly striking the child on the head, using a broom to hit him, and slamming his head against a wall. These actions reportedly left Charvandre unable to eat or properly open his mouth.
In a subsequent incident, Bosman allegedly attacked the child again following another bed-wetting episode, which led to blood in Charvandre’s mouth and a loss of control over his bodily functions. Reports indicate that the child was left weakened and unable to move his legs.
Following the attack, Bosman reportedly instructed the child’s mother to remain silent about the incidents before taking Charvandre to De Aar New Hospital. Tragically, upon arrival, medical personnel determined that Charvandre had already succumbed to his injuries.
Hospital staff noticed multiple bruises on Charvandre’s body, particularly on his back, and alerted authorities, leading to Bosman’s arrest. He is facing charges of murder and assault, and police are continuing their investigation.
Bosman will remain in custody until his court appearance on November 1, where he is expected to formally apply for bail. The NPA has indicated its intention to oppose bail due to the seriousness of the charges.
Senokoatsane emphasized that the prosecution team is dedicated to ensuring justice is served, highlighting the case’s severity in relation to domestic violence and child abuse.
