According to a statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on November 12, 2024, Ambeyi attempted to cover up the crime by wrapping Kimotho’s body in a blanket and concealing it in a septic tank on the property.
Kimotho was reported missing on Saturday, and her family had been unable to reach her, as her phone was turned off and her whereabouts unknown.
On Sunday evening, detectives discovered her body in the septic tank, with visible injuries to the back of her head, believed to have been caused by a blunt object.
The body was taken to the Kenyatta University Funeral Home, and a manhunt for Ambeyi was launched.
A team of detectives, led by Kasarani DCIO Justus Ombati, worked with the Criminal Research and Intelligence Bureau to trace the suspect. He was eventually found hiding at his cousin’s house in Kinoo, Nairobi, and both men were arrested.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Ambeyi had worked as a casual laborer at Kimotho’s home for a month before the murder. During questioning, Ambeyi confessed to killing Kimotho after he was paid less than the agreed amount for his work.
The DCI statement confirmed: “The 21-year-old man, believed to have murdered his employer on Sunday, November 10, has been arrested. The suspect, Victor Ambeyi, was tracked down in Kinoo, where he was being sheltered by his cousin, Collins Seda Wanjau, 22. Both were taken into custody.”
Further investigation led detectives to Githurai 44, where they recovered the victim’s mobile phone at a phone repair shop. The shop owner, Benjamin Kimani Mwaura, 22, was also arrested.
The three suspects are being held at Kasarani Police Station as detectives continue to investigate the motive behind the murder. They are expected to appear in court soon.
