Baltasar Engonga, the former Director-General of Equatorial Guinea’s National Financial Investigation Agency, has been remanded in Malabo’s Black Beach Prison.

The 54-year-old economist, who was under investigation for alleged fraud, was found to have recorded over 400 explicit tapes involving the wives of high-ranking officials in the country.

As a result, Engonga was arrested, and President Obiang Nguema Mbasogo dismissed him from his position.

A decree issued on November 4, 2024, cited “irregularities in his duties, as well as inappropriate personal conduct” as the reason for his removal from office.

A video surfaced on November 8 showing Engonga in handcuffs and leg shackles during a court appearance.

He was officially removed from his post on November 6 and later transferred to Malabo Central Prison, facing charges of corruption and embezzlement.
