An Enugu State magistrate court has ordered the remand of Mrs. Ada Ogbogu at the Enugu Correctional Centre for allegedly assaulting her 3-year-old stepson, causing severe injuries with a pestle.

The incident was reported by a neighbor who, upon hearing the child’s cries, forced entry into Mrs. Ogbogu’s apartment. The child was found unable to stand, with his leg visibly dislocated.

During the arraignment on November 5, 2024, police stated that Mrs. Ogbogu’s actions were intended to cause grievous harm, an offense that could lead to life imprisonment if she is convicted.

According to the charge sheet CME/646C/2024, the accused allegedly poured hot water on the child’s face and struck him with a pestle, resulting in a dislocated leg. The offense falls under Section 288 (a) of the Enugu State Criminal Code, which outlines severe penalties for acts causing bodily harm.

Chief Magistrate Alphonsus Edeh denied her bail request, ordering her to remain in custody until the case is revisited on November 26, 2024, pending a report from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Enugu State’s Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, emphasized that the arraignment aligns with the government’s commitment to ensuring justice.

She reiterated Governor Peter Mbah’s zero-tolerance policy for child abuse in the state, warning, “If you mistreat or abuse any child in Enugu State, you will face serious consequences.”
