Tragedy struck the Okemesi community in Ekiti West LGA, Ekiti State, as four young men drowned while swimming in the Osun River along the Ajido-Ikoro road on Sunday, November 10.
The victims were attendees of a funeral ceremony who decided to take a swim in the river.
Among the deceased, two were from the Aworogun family of Okemesi, while one of the others, who had traveled from Lagos State, was reportedly a mechanic.
Ekiti State Police spokesperson, Sunday Abutu, confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is ongoing.
“A distress call was received on November 10, 2024, reporting that a 23-year-old and a 25-year-old from Okemesi-Ekiti, along with two friends visiting from Lagos for the funeral, went to swim in the Osun River. Sadly, all four drowned.
“Their bodies have been recovered and taken to the morgue, and investigations are underway,” he said.
