Operatives from the Edo State Police Command have successfully rescued 14-month-old Grace Osamagbe, who was abducted by her househelp, Rejoice Chukwu, in Benin City.
The state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Umoru Ozigi, revealed the details during a briefing over the weekend. He explained that Chukwu, along with her boyfriend, Destiny Uchechukwu, kidnapped the baby in April 2024, demanding a ransom of N160,000 from the victim’s parents.
Despite the payment, the suspects sold the child for N500,000 to Doris Chiwendu in Owerri, Imo State.
According to CP Ozigi, the kidnapping was reported by Jacob Egharevba, who reported that his 7-month-old granddaughter, Osamagbe Grace, was abducted by her househelp in April.
Following the report, the Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber Crime Unit tracked and arrested Chukwu, 24, and Uchechukwu, 28, at Peptic Junction in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
During questioning, the suspects admitted to selling the child for N500,000. On November 9, 2024, police arrested Doris Chiwendu and Jane Amaigbo in the Ubomiri area of Imo State. The victim was rescued and reunited with her family.
The suspects are set to face charges in court soon.
