The Ebonyi State Police Command has detained two men accused of stripping, flogging, and humiliating two teenage girls over an alleged theft of chickens.
Police spokesperson DSP Joshua Ukandu announced the arrests in a statement on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. According to Ukandu, the arrests followed the spread of a viral video on social media showing the incident, which has sparked public outrage.
The incident reportedly took place in November 2023 in the Ojiegbe Ngbo community, Ohaukwu Local Government Area, though the video only resurfaced recently.
In the footage, the two teenage girls were stripped, beaten, and subjected to other degrading treatments before being paraded naked around the community with the allegedly stolen fowls.
“The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested Dennis Ali and Ituma Sunday, the primary suspects in a disturbing viral video where two teenage girls were stripped, flogged, and dehumanized,” the statement read.
“Upon assuming office, CP Anthonia A. Uche-Anya, fdc, emphasised the need to eradicate trial by ordeal, jungle justice, and self-help in the criminal justice system.”
She reaffirmed the command’s commitment to rooting out such practices in Ebonyi State with the support of stakeholders. She further assured that those involved will face the full force of the law for their heinous actions.
