U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has named tech billionaire Elon Musk and conservative activist Vivek Ramaswamy to spearhead a newly created Department of Government Efficiency.
The move is part of Trump’s plan to streamline federal operations and reduce excessive regulations.
In a statement, Trump emphasized that the department’s mission is to help “dismantle government bureaucracy” and eliminate unnecessary red tape.
“These two exceptional Americans will lead efforts to dismantle government bureaucracy, cut excessive regulations, eliminate wasteful spending, and restructure federal agencies. This is a key step for the Save America Movement,” Trump announced on Tuesday.
He likened the initiative to a modern-day “Manhattan Project,” stating that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has long been a goal for Republican leaders.
The department will provide external guidance and collaborate with the White House and the Office of Management & Budget to implement major structural reforms, aiming to foster a more entrepreneurial approach to government operations.
Trump set a timeline for Musk and Ramaswamy to complete their work by July 4, 2026, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Elon Musk responded enthusiastically to the appointment, pledging transparency in the department’s actions. “All activities of the Department of Government Efficiency will be posted online for public oversight. If the public believes we are cutting essential services or not addressing wasteful expenditures, we want to hear about it,” Musk shared.
He also hinted at creating a “leaderboard” to highlight the most absurd government spending, adding, “It will be both tragic and entertaining.”
Musk concluded with a stark warning: “Either we make government efficient, or America risks bankruptcy. It’s a harsh reality, but it’s true.”
