Baby ESCAPED ‘three seconds from death’ as baby pram smashed into train carriage: video

A baby whose pram smashed into a train carriage was just three seconds away from colliding with it head on, a report has revealed.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The miraculous escape was captured on CCTV footage at Banbury train station in June when a buggy carrying the three-month-old child rolled towards the tracks and hit the Cross Country train.

The impact sent the buggy spiraling down the platform before it toppled over, with someone swiftly plucking the young child out and to safety.

THE NARROW ESCAPE

The youngster sustained a ‘minor head injury’, but had the accident happened three seconds sooner, the pram would have collided with the train head on, according to a report by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB). 

RAIB added that it was ‘unable to determine’ how the baby’s mother let go of the pram, which did not have its brakes applied at the time. 

OFFICIAL REPORT

It added: ‘Around 15 seconds before the accident, the infant’s parent started to move the pram closer to the platform edge, intending to board the train. 

‘The pram was moved perpendicular to the platform edge and, around 10 seconds before the accident, its front wheels were touching the yellow line with the parent holding the pram’s handle with both hands. 

‘The infant’s parent then leant away from the pram to place one hand on their wheeled luggage and turned to face their relative, momentarily letting go of the pram.’ 

‘Around 6 seconds before the accident, with the parent still facing away from the pram, it began to move towards the platform edge. 

Crucially, the report stated that around three seconds before the parm collided with the carriage, ‘the front of the train passed the position where the pram was located’.

This means that if the pram had been in the position it was three seconds sooner, it would have fallen onto the tracks ahead of the train.
