Russell Brand has faced backlash for allegedly ‘mocking Christianity’ after sharing images of himself performing a baptism while dressed in only white underwear.
The 49-year-old comedian, who was baptized in the Thames in April this year, has been open about his deepening connection with Christianity since 2023.
Despite his ongoing involvement in an investigation concerning sexual assault allegations made against him last year, Brand has been outspoken about his growing faith and his desire to explore the teachings of Christianity further.
Now, it appears that Brand has taken the step of performing baptisms himself. He posted a photo of him and a colleague baptizing someone, captioning it, “It might seem a bit soon to be baptizing people, but the Apostles did it on day one, so here we are.”
However, both Brand and his colleague were oddly dressed in nothing but their underwear, while the individual being baptized wore surf gear. This unusual choice of attire has sparked online outrage, with many accusing him of disrespecting the Christian faith.
One commenter questioned, “Am I the only one wondering why the guy getting baptized is in surf gear while the two performing the baptism are in their underwear? This is quite strange.”
Another criticized Brand’s actions, calling it “utterly inappropriate” and accusing him of showing irreverence toward the sacredness of the ceremony. A third person added, “This feels like you’re intentionally mocking Christianity.”
