While already known as the Princess of Asturias, the heir to the Spanish throne was appointed honorary mayor of Oviedo on Friday.
Leonor received this honor in recognition of the Spanish Royal Family’s close ties to Asturias and her role as honorary president of the Princess of Asturias Foundation.
Before the awards, she was presented with the honorary mayor’s baton and insignia and signed Oviedo’s golden book. Her father, King Felipe, also held this title when he was the Prince of Asturias.
In addition to her new title, Princess Leonor holds numerous others, including Princess of Girona, Princess of Viana, Duchess of Montblanc, Countess of Cervera, and Lady of Balaguer.
Reflecting on the honor, she expressed her gratitude: “I accept it with respect and the commitment that will always guide me to be worthy of these recognitions, just as my father felt nearly 40 years ago.”
The 18-year-old also shared memories of her visits to Asturias, saying, “From a young age, I enjoyed exploring the forests of eastern Asturias with my family and listening to my great-grandmother’s stories of her life here.”
She fondly recalled memories of beaches, mountains, and her first taste of sea urchins—a love her sister Sofia didn’t quite share.
For the awards, which honor contributions in the arts, sciences, and social issues, Leonor looked elegant in a grey blazer. Her family joined her, with King Felipe and Queen Letizia looking sharp in black, while Infanta Sofia dazzled in a sparkly gold outfit.
