Six people have died, and five others were injured in a tragic road accident in Ibadan, Oyo State. The incident, which took place on the morning of October 14, 2024, involved a trailer transporting tiles, a lorry carrying soft drinks, and two tricycles.
It occurred at Oke Eleshin, Amuloko, along Akanran Road in the Ona Ara Local Government Area of the state.
The five injured victims were riding in the tricycles. One of the injured was a pupil, whose mother was reportedly killed in the crash.
Four of the injured, including two primary school children, were treated at Amuloko City Hospital, with two receiving outpatient care and the other two admitted for more intensive treatment.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to a nearby hospital, though its identity has not yet been confirmed.
A staff member of the Oyo Road Transport Maintenance Agency attributed the accident to the trailer’s brake failure as it descended a slope. An eyewitness added that the trailer lost control and collided with an unsuspecting tricycle.
The eyewitness explained, “The trailer lost control and hit a tricycle, also known as Keke NAPEP. Another lorry carrying soft drinks, coming from behind, tried to avoid the trailer but ended up hitting another Keke NAPEP.”
In addition to the vehicles and tricycles involved, two other cars were also damaged. Sympathizers, who were prevented from setting fire to the vehicles, blamed the drivers—who have since fled—and suggested that the situation could have been mitigated if the trailer had swerved into a ditch instead of crashing into the oncoming tricycle.
Raji Wale, Managing Director of Amuloko City Hospital, confirmed that several victims were brought to his hospital. He stated, “We received four patients. Two were treated as outpatients and have been stabilized, while the other two with severe injuries are being treated here.”
He added, “One of the children was in the Keke NAPEP with their mother, who died in the accident. The other child is receiving care, and we are doing everything to treat those in critical condition.”
