The Grade A Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, has adjourned a divorce case brought by Adewole against his wife, Oluwabunmi, citing intolerable behavior.
Adewole accused Oluwabunmi of being irresponsible and failing in her roles as a wife and mother. He claimed she neglected household chores, leaving their home unclean, while he had to take on her responsibilities.
The plaintiff alleged that Oluwabunmi often became violent during arguments, sometimes biting him and pulling his scrotum until he screamed in pain. He also stated that she recently threatened his life, prompting him to seek legal intervention.
Oluwabunmi denied all accusations and opposed the dissolution of their marriage. She also contested Adewole’s request for custody of their children, asserting that he was cruel and unkind.
“I am asking for a divorce because my wife lacks the qualities of a good partner and mother. Our marriage is devoid of love and respect. She was lazy and disrespectful,” Adewole stated. He recounted their eight-year relationship, including their introduction ceremony, and noted that he had not paid her bride price.
He described how Oluwabunmi consistently neglected her duties, refused to clean the house or cook, and expressed frustration at her lack of appreciation for his efforts. He claimed she was prone to violence, damaging his belongings during fights, including smashing his mobile phone without remorse.
“Oluwabunmi would pull my scrotum during our arguments, refusing to let go until I pleaded with her,” he detailed. He also accused her of being abusive to their children, notably beating their eldest child and threatening him through messages.
“I have been better off since she left,” Adewole concluded, requesting an end to their marriage and custody of their children, as well as a restraining order against her.
In response, Oluwabunmi claimed her husband’s allegations were false and argued against the divorce, insisting she was the best caretaker for their children. She highlighted her health struggles after giving birth via cesarean section, noting that Adewole disregarded medical advice and continued to demand she perform strenuous tasks.
“He neglected my emotional needs and denied me intimacy for over two years,” she explained, adding that her husband’s sister exacerbated the situation by siding with him during conflicts.
Court president Mrs. S.M. Akintayo ruled that there was no valid marriage to dissolve since no customary wedding took place and no bride price was paid. She awarded custody of the children to Oluwabunmi, citing their need for maternal care, and issued a restraining order against her from threatening or interfering with Adewole’s personal life.
